lanterns

Another lantern making workshop, this time with a talented and energetic high school group at Brisbane Girls Grammar School. It amazes me how quickly a group can assemble these convincing sculptural and teepee like structures from such light weight materials, and then infuse them with mystery from the light within.

wood engraving

The skills of wood engraving intrigue me. I pore over old illustrations and create my own versions of those white line and black line images. I have been trying some wood engraving, with those curious engraving tools and sticky lithographic ink at Impress Print Studio http://www.impress.org.au/

solstice lantern parade

Every year people gather for celebration, music, organic food, art and ceremony at Northey St city farm for the winter solstice gathering. This year I was invited to do lantern making for the lantern parade. Before the festival we made some sculptural lanterns, and at the festival I prepared some small equilateral pyramid lanterns for the crowd to make. When the lanterns were assembled everyone took them to Bob Mud http://www.nscf.org.au/bob-mud/ to paint with magical mud designs and colours. The activity was so popular that after it finished I set up a little table near my market stall so people  could gather sticks to sculpt more lanterns. Some photos from the day.

Indigi day out

The folk at Indigiscapes invited me to have a market stall at Indigi day out.  http://indigiscapes.redland.qld.gov.au/  Indigiscapes is a plant nursery with plants native to the Brisbane region. It has an extensive garden with bushwalks, information centre a cafe and gift shop and playgrounds for children where they can interact with nature. Folk Redlands  http://67.222.30.84/~folkredl  are based there, and the day was filled with the sound of folk music, followed in the evening by a bush dance. There were clay crafts, weaving and wildlife encounters for children, bush tucker treats and artisan stalls. It was fun having my own shop for the day in the lovely gardens there, seeing friends and watching the children walk by with their faces painted by Fairy Raine  http://fairylane.com.au/  then lighting my stall with handmade lanterns at twilight.

My shop will be popping up next at the Northey st Solstice festival and I will have lantern making activities there too. http://www.nscf.org.au/winter-solstice-festival-2014/

lanterns at city farm

On Saturday I ran a lantern making worksop for the winter solstice festival at Northey St City Farm, among the fruit trees, vegetable patches and the pleasing sound of chickens.

lanterns in the outback

Travelling west to Charleville, then further west to Quilpie, along a road lined with gibber stones. Road trains speed past and wedgetail eagles hover overhead. Away from light pollution the night stars form a canopy that is a topic of conversation with travellers from the city. Quilpie, an opal mining and cattle town has sculptures of cattle and sheep along the main street, stunning sunsets and night skies, and an active creative community. I was there to run a lantern making workshop for Flying Arts.

tribal opera

Ready for battle tribal wear: the rebellion against an insane ruler begins. I drew the designs and printed them onto readymades for the cast.

They are for rock opera Boadicea which opens at the Roundhouse theatre in Kelvin Grove on 27th May.
