woodford set up 2012-2013

My favourite time is before the festival each year when stallholders, artists, travelers and the familiar faces of the woodford crew are setting the scene for the festival, screenprinting the materials for the festival decor during the day then wandering the site at night with its revamped venues, amazing bamboo constructions near the lake and the pineapple bar, relaxing in the venues at night while they are still being constructed. Some photos from the visual arts shed.

Collinsville Flying Arts

I stayed at the Collinsville Town and Country Hotel and that old Slim Dusty song rattled around my head.  People were friendly and called out g’day to friends and the flow of workers in neon shirts passing in and out of town, adding the occasional O to the ends of names. Collinsville is a town with a visible history, and even the mines have names “Jacks pit” for one. The coal has been mined there since 1912 and the trade unions and Labor have played a large part of the history of the town. It’s original name was “Moongunya” place of coal. The old Queensland timber architecture, houses on stilts, backyard orchards and the occasional backyard dunny reveal another eras. There are murals and signs that tell stories about the history of the town and its people. The drive there was through forests and ranges, on curving roads with peregrins circling overhead..

I dragged in my big suitcase of art materials and the chidren gathered around peering at what I had brought.  A small boy asked “are you going to play all the parts?”
Here are a few photos from the trip and workshops at St John Bosco (the patron saint of magicians!) and Collinsville Primary Schools.

The children have created vegetable gardens at both schools, and are learning about Australian history. Ned Kelly was a popular choice of image for their t shirts.

I stopped in Bowen on the way back for a quick paddle before catching the plane from Proserpine.

Photos from a Flying Arts visit to St Michaels, a pretty little school nestled between bush and farmland near Bribie Island, screenprinting with grade 3 on library bags and making some artworks to go in the school foyer. The children sent me a surprise gift before Christmas: a box of 48 hand made thank you cards, each with their own message and drawings about screenprinting, art and trees!

For over thirty years Flying Arts send visiting artist all over Queensland for artist residencies, weekend workshops, festivals and professional development, They have a broad range of programs, exhibitions, talks, events and residencies

Tree of life prints Logan Regional Gallery

This is the second time I have created images of the tree of life for a community arts project, the other was the Indigikids shirt project. The idea is for each person to create elements for the tree, and the story to emerge during the project. We made two different tree screens and printed them.

Green men has been appearing in my artworks for some time, For the past couple of years I have helped the Morris dancers prepare screenprint shirts and outfits for the Woodford Folk Festival. Last year their design was a green man, and after that evening more green men have been appearing in my artwork. Here are some of my offerings of the verdant man in progress..
My verdant man canvas is on display at the Brisbane Institute of Art this week at the ‘Intuition’ exhibition of Tutor’s work

Blue sky, and cycleways. Cycling over and under the bridges on the Brisbane river, watching racing bikes speed by, past the tourists, lovers, commuters and swimmers, cycling past barges and ferries. The feeling of freedom cycling by the weekend events, markets, live music and art. Catching the ferry to begin the ride again on the other side. Cycling one of my preferred leisure activities, and Brisbane is the perfect city for riding, with new stretches of cycleway constantly being put in place.  Recently I discovered a new stretch near Boggo Road with markets on Sunday mornings that host live music, handmade things, good food and tours of the old jail.  The stretch of floating cycleway that snaked away during the floods is going to be rebuilt,  It will be fixed, not floating, and I miss that etherial feeling of cycling and floating on the river on the way to the Powerhouse and New Farm.

Some photos from my trip to the Pilbara for the Nameless Jarndunmunha Festival.

We made flags and banners at the schools, each child designing a key or lock, and the larger keys were designed by a group of artists at the cultural centre. There was also a screenprinting activity creating festival bags on Saturday at the festival.

Catwalk Botanique

Every year there is a fashion parade with a botanical theme at Mt Cootha Botanical gardens. Bettina Palmer organises this annual event, where models parade local artist, carftspeople and designer wearables. It also incorporates a shop selling unique hand made wearables. These silk and silk georgette scarves were hand painted by people with disabilities. All our work sold, and the money helped fund our program, Here are some photos of our silk scarves in the process of creation.

printed teepees

This project is something I’ve wanted to do since I made my first teepee a few years ago, and the artist residence at Mt Nebo school was the perfect project to create these teepees.

At the after school care centre the creative projects proliferate, and the parents share the enthusiasm for the creative projects in this dynamic community. Venus, Roma and Vanessa and others have guided the children through some extraordinary projects, including casting body parts and a billy cart project where the billy carts were made, then learner and provisional licence tests were give to would be billy cart enthusiasts.

On my project, there were two days printing,  followed by a teepee making day

The whole school participated in the painting and printing of the teepees, and the grade 1-3 teepee was exhibited at the Pine Rivers regional Youth Art awards, called ‘In the rainbow hut the birds are singing’
