Dysart tour Flying Arts

Flying arts tour to Dysart, a workshop in printmaking using less toxic techniques. We etched aluminium using bluestone copper sulphate, and tried inky ground and crayon as our blockout mediums. The chine colle corked very well with the imagery.
Had a wonderful time in this booming mining town, and played my first ever game of golf among cockatoos galahs and ducks at Middlemount Golf Club where they have the best fried icecream anywhere!

anything is possible… IWD 2012

BRISSC banner celebrating women and girls. The banner was designed and made in an afternoon for International Women’s day. Generosity of spirit, compassion, vibrance, resourcefulness, connectedness, caring, and listening are attributes of women I like, and when given a voice in the world, we bring these attributes to business, politics community and friendship, and perhaps even change and healing on our planet. A little empowerment can bring about lot of change. Women haven’t had equal rights for very long, and it’s not global yet, so celebrate!

There is felting, jewellery making, claywork, painting and drawing in an integrated program designed specifically for people with very high needs. It’s about learning and making things together keeping hands busy and faces smiling. A joy to do.

woodfordia!

The past week I’ve been whisked off to the wonderful creative ocean of Woodford set up, and was willingly marooned there, printing and dyeing ducks and dots, eating wonderful vegetarian food at the Duck, listening to some magical music- often the setup jams and spontaneous music is the sweetest of all- drinking enough guiness to sleep like a baby, and amused that I feel so indulged and happy in my leaky tent in the mud.

One of the highlights for me was when day was done in the banner making tent, the crew found scraps and interesting rags and restitched them into garments for the festival, or printed onto them, There was  a butterfly costume created by Kerry, in the shed where I was working, and lots and lots of banners to mark the walkways around the festival. There extraordinary atmosphere created before the festival, and the sharing of stories, ideas and skills by so many travellers from around the globe. and our crew- Christine, Vashti, Matt, Sarah, Stephanie, Nathalie, Cheryl and the Extraordinary Penny Smith! What a celebration!

Another highlight during setup was a sublime music moment by Fiona, on the hill at sunset her voice drifting across the beautiful green, welcoming the hilltop sky watchers.

December!

Back from a recent trip to Wandoan with Flying Arts, enjoyed the workshops, the op shop and the pub. The town is about to be consumed by a gigantic open cut coal mine. With rents there at $800pw mining people are moving in and old timers are upset to be moved away from their farms. I felt sad to be there amid the cultural shift and worried about the future of farming in places like these, where as the lure of big mining bucks increases, school students know that can earn more in the mines without and education than the schoolteachers do with theirs, and do not hesitate to let their teachers know this.

Here are a few photos from my workshop

Indigiscapes Centre Koala Arts textile project

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Here are some photos from a project with Indigiscapes Redlands, sponsored by Redlands Council.Redlands has one of the largest urban koala populations in Australia, but their numbers are dwindling drastically, due to declining habitat, speeding cars, attacks by dogs when they are in backyards or dogs off leashes, and disease. The project promoted koala issues, and hundreds of calico shopping bags were printed with koala designs to promote Koala awareness, and some textile artworks and banners were made from the community created stencils

Mosaic Seating Project

Here are some photos of a mosaic seating project that I did called Landmark Trees for Queenslands’s 150th celebrations. It was a joint project with Queensland Govenment and Brisbane Council.

The seating was set within view and among a grove of Silky oak and Hoop Pines, which will grow to great heights in the future. The theme was Past, Present and Future. All the images were designed and made by the school students. There were 15 schools in all. Jo Armytage and Cate Collopy were the other artists I worked with on this project. The 5 schools that I worked with were Calamvale Special School, Runcorn State HIgh, Yeronga State HIgh, Oakleigh State School and Junction Park State School.
Artists Jennifer Hamilton and Sharon Lees helped me with facilitating the artwork and workshops and transferring it onto panels for the seating.
